The already-scenic Florida Keys received a boost in beauty from Inspire's design of a new scenic overlook along the Overseas Heritage Trail (a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian path) and U.S. Route 1. The project creates a safe and welcoming rest area for trail users exploring one of Florida’s most iconic coastal corridors. The effort included full landscape and hardscape design as well as detailed construction documents to support delivery of a high‑quality public-space improvement funded through the FDOT Local Agency Program (LAP).

The trailhead and rest area are on the western side of Big Pine Key, which is known for its unique ecology and proximity to the National Key Deer Refuge. As one of the more rural islands in the Lower Keys, it draws cyclists, paddlers, and nature enthusiasts who rely on the Overseas Heritage Trail for recreation and mobility. The site includes an existing limestone basin, informal walkways, a small parking area, a restroom building, an information kiosk, and a kayak launch. Enhancing this scenic overlook supports Monroe County’s goals of expanding outdoor recreation, protecting sensitive environments, and improving trail‑connected public access.

Inspire led a process that integrated environmental permitting, surveying, civil engineering, landscape architecture, MEP systems, and structural engineering to create a comprehensive and resilient design solution. The team developed a cohesive vision for the overlook that incorporated accessible pathways, durable materials appropriate for the coastal environment, enhanced shade and seating areas, and improved circulation for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. The design also strengthened the connection to the beach kayak launch and improved the aesthetics and functionality of the kiosk and rest area. Construction documents detailed all landscape and hardscape elements to ensure seamless implementation within the requirements of the FDOT LAP program.
