Weddington Comprehensive Plan
Protecting rural heritage while planning for what's next
The Town of Weddington is a rural residential community that borders Charlotte. The Town has seen substantial growth, resulting in a number of challenges including the community´s desire to retain its rural heritage.
As a result, the Town hired Inspire Placemaking Collective to lead an extensive public engagement process and update its comprehensive plan accordingly. Part of the process included identifying if a downtown was needed and to create a plan for that potential.
Inspire led multiple workshops steering committee meetings, and two heavily attended open houses to gain feedback from residents on the vision for the community. It was determined that changes to the comprehensive plan were undesired, as the general consensus was that the current plan effectively limited unwanted development. Projections and demographic information were nevertheless updated, allowing future growth to be evaluated.
An updated Comprehensive Plan was adopted that addressed the concerns of the residents and provided current data needed for the Town to make informed decisions. A downtown master plan was also presented. The Town ultimately decided that a park would be the most appropriate use of the property and that they would continue to evaluate this concept.
